keyboard_arrow_downA rack is loaded with thirteen tiles and then pushed, nudged and leaned on for an hour. On a polished table, a rack with a smooth base creeps forward a centimetre at a time until it is somewhere it should not be, usually into the discard area.
A textured or rubberised base stops it. It is the least glamorous feature on a rack and the one that is noticed most, because the alternative is repositioning your own equipment every few hands.
Racks are frequently sold in pairs, which equips half a table. The result is that two players hide their hands and two hold theirs up, which is not a fair game.
Four is the number to insist on, and it is worth checking on any listing before ordering.
Tortoiseshell sits between clear and opaque. Clear racks vanish against a table, which is elegant and makes them easy to knock. Opaque coloured ones announce themselves. A tortoiseshell finish is visible without being loud, which suits a table in a living room.
