keyboard_arrow_downMost rack listings do not publish a length. It is the single measurement that decides whether the rack works, and its absence is the reason racks are returned more often than any other mahjong accessory.
An American hand runs to thirteen tiles plus what is exposed. At 17 inches a rack holds that with room to sort, rather than forcing tiles hard against each other where a nudge sends the row down. Shorter racks exist and they work for the Chinese game, which uses a shorter hand.
The rod does the mechanical work of moving the wall forward. On a long American wall, the alternative is four people reaching across a table, which is slow and knocks tiles flat. The rod turns that into one motion.
It is also the part that fails first on cheap racks, usually by separating from the rail. Check it moves smoothly end to end when the set arrives, before the first game rather than during it.
Worth noting because it is unusual and genuinely useful. Racks crack: one gets stood on, one goes in a bag under something heavy. Replacing a single rack rather than a set of four is normally impossible, and it is the reason perfectly good sets end up with a mismatched seat.
Wipe clean. Stack rather than slide, since the surfaces scratch against each other. Store the rods engaged rather than loose, which is how they go missing.
Cut for American tiles. If your tiles are 40 mm Chinese or 20 mm travel size, measure before ordering.
