keyboard_arrow_downA mahjong rack holds a hand upright and hides it. A pusher does the other half of the job: it pushes the wall of face down tiles forward so the players can reach it without leaning across the table. On an American table with 166 tiles, that wall is long, and moving it by hand is how tiles get knocked over.
The mechanism is the whole product. A pusher that catches on the rack drags the wall out of line and the tiles topple. This one slides along the rack rather than gripping it, which is what keeps the wall square while it travels.
Most racks are opaque plastic in a colour chosen by a factory. Clear acrylic disappears against a wooden table, a linen cloth or a marble counter, which matters when the game happens in a dining room rather than a game room.
Six finishes are available, from fully transparent through to pink and silver and black. In a standing group, the practical use of six finishes is that each player keeps a seat: the same rack every week, no argument about which hand belonged to whom.
If the set already came with racks, the reason to replace them is usually one of two things. Either the pushers have separated from the racks and no longer hold, or the racks are too short for the tiles and a hand sits proud of the lip where the table can read it. Both are worth fixing, because both change the game rather than the look of it.
Acrylic wipes clean and does not hold the oil that comes off hands over an evening. It scratches more easily than melamine, so the habit worth keeping is stacking the racks rather than sliding them across each other into a bag.
These are cut for American tiles. Chinese tiles at 40 mm and mini travel tiles at 20 mm will sit in them, but not the way they should: too tall and the hand shows, too small and it slides. Check the tile height of the set before ordering, which is the single measurement that decides whether a rack works.
