keyboard_arrow_downMahjong runs two winds at once. Each player holds a seat wind, and the game holds a round wind that advances once the deal has passed all four seats. Both affect scoring.
Without an indicator, the round wind lives in four people's memories, and it survives until the evening two of them disagree. There is no way to settle that afterwards, and the hand in question is usually the one that mattered.
Function is identical, so it is a question of what the set looks like. Acrylic suits a modern set and wipes clean. Wood suits a traditional set and has more weight, so it stays put when the wall is pushed against it.
The wooden version here is circular, which turns cleanly and is harder to knock out of alignment than a square marker.
Set the round wind at the start of play. Advance it when the deal has gone all the way around. The seat winds follow the players. It is a two second action per round and it removes an entire category of dispute.
Sets built for export are assembled around what looks complete in a photograph. The indicator is small, cheap and invisible in an image, so it is the first thing dropped, and buyers only discover it is missing once they are playing properly.
Wipe clean. Keep the wooden version out of damp, which makes it stiff to turn.

Sets made for the American game print the letters instead. The indicator uses the same four marks, in acrylic or in wood, so it can be matched to the set it sits beside rather than clashing with it.

East, south, west and north, and a standard set carries four copies of each, so 16 wind tiles in total. The order surprises new players: seating and the deal move east to south to west to north, which runs counter clockwise around the table rather than the way a clock does. This indicator is marked with all four and shows which one the current round belongs to, readable from every seat.
