keyboard_arrow_downA mahjong deck runs to well over a hundred cards across three suits, honours and flowers. Put away unsorted, it has to be sorted again before the next game, and that is five minutes at the start of every session.
Separators let the deck be put away sorted. Setup becomes lifting out what is needed rather than searching for it.
The same pieces work as dividers in a tile box, keeping suits in their own sections. That is worth more than the sorting time: tiles held in groups do not grind against each other in transit, which is what rounds corners over years.
Card dividers crease at the top edge where they are pulled, and once creased they stop standing. Polypropylene flexes and recovers, and it does not absorb anything spilled on it.
More than the strict minimum, which is deliberate. Three suits, honours and flowers is five, and the spares cover the pieces that get lost or that a particular group wants separated differently.
Wipe clean. Store them flat with the deck rather than loose, since thin flat pieces bend when they are the only thing in a bag.

If you play the Chinese or Japanese game rather than the American one, no card is needed at all, since the hands come from the rules themselves.
Numbered tiles within a suit split into three families, 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9, and members of the same family tend to complete the same hand. A partial run of 2 and 3 accepts either the 1 or the 4; extend the shape and the 7 comes in as well. It is a memory aid for reading waits, and part of why many players keep each suit separated rather than mixed when they put a deck away.
