keyboard_arrow_downA great many mahjong sets ship tiles, dice and nothing else. The racks are assumed, and the first evening is played with thirteen tiles balanced against a book or laid flat where everyone can read them.
Four racks is what a table needs. Sets that include two are common and they solve half the problem, which in practice means two players have racks and two do not.
The rack holds and hides a hand. The pusher moves the wall of face down tiles forward so players can reach it without leaning across the table. On a long wall, pushing by hand is how tiles get knocked flat, and it is slow.
The mechanism is the part to check when the set arrives. Run the pusher end to end before the first game: one that catches will drag the wall out of line every time it is used.
Colours arrive assorted rather than chosen, which is worth knowing. The practical benefit remains: in a group that plays weekly, each player takes a colour and keeps it, so a hand left on a rack while somebody takes a call is identifiable.
Racks are cut for a tile height. Measure a tile from your set before ordering, because a rack built for 30 mm American tiles will not hold a 40 mm Chinese tile, and a 20 mm travel tile will slide inside it.
Wipe clean. Stack the racks rather than sliding them against each other, which is what scratches acrylic.

A 144 tile set is the traditional Chinese complement: three suits, winds, dragons and flowers. Sets sold as 166 are built for American mahjong, which adds eight jokers along with extra flowers and blank replacement tiles. The distinction matters for racks, because American play exposes melds on the rack as a hand develops, so every seat needs one. These arrive as four acrylic racks with pushers.
One hundred and forty four is the older Chinese count: three suits of nine ranks in four copies each, twenty eight honour tiles and eight flowers. Nothing is missing from it, it is simply the traditional complement, and most sets made in China still ship that way. Whichever count you own, racks are usually left out of the box, which is what a set of four acrylic racks with pushers exists to fix.
Chinese mahjong in its regional forms, Hong Kong rules and most international variants all play on 144 tiles. American mahjong is the main exception, since it adds jokers to the complement. Either way the hand in front of a player is thirteen tiles, and it stands better on a rack than laid flat where the table can read it. Measure a tile's height first, because racks are cut to a tile depth.
Part count and weight. A full set is roughly a hundred and fifty moulded tiles, each cut, engraved and coloured to the same tolerance, then boxed and shipped as a heavy object. Accessories add to that total, which is exactly why racks are the first thing dropped from a set to hold its price down.
