It is jewellery strung from miniature mahjong tiles rather than anything you play with. This one uses acrylic charms on an elastic band, supplied in assorted colours, and the whole bracelet weighs 0.05 kg, so it is light enough to forget on the wrist. There is no clasp, which means no sizing to get wrong when it is bought as a gift. At a table it reads as a signal between players, and as ordinary jewellery to everyone else.
Because a playing set is a lot of pieces finished individually. A Chinese set runs to 144 tiles and an American one to 166, and the price follows the material and the engraving: bone and bamboo, vintage bakelite or hand carved and hand painted faces all take time that machine pressed melamine does not. The charms on this bracelet are small acrylic mahjong tile shapes made for wearing, so a wearable version sits nowhere near a playing set.
The three suits trace back to money. Circles are coins, bamboo are strings of a hundred coins, and characters carry the word for ten thousand. The honours are the four winds, east, south, west and north, and the three dragons, red, green and white. Flowers and seasons sit outside the suits as bonus tiles. The charms here are chosen for how they look on the wrist rather than for what they mean, and they arrive assorted.
It is a shorthand players use rather than a written rule. Within a suit the numbers three apart behave alike, so 1, 4 and 7 form one family, 2, 5 and 8 another, and 3, 6 and 9 the third. A partial run of 2 and 3 is completed by either 1 or 4, and the same shape repeats up the suit. It is a habit of the Chinese and Japanese games, and it does not apply to a bracelet, which carries tile shapes and no hand.
