A pusher does the other half of the job: it moves the wall of face down tiles forward so players can reach it without leaning across. On an American table with 166 tiles the wall is long, and pushing it by hand is how tiles get knocked flat.
The mechanism is the whole product. A pusher that catches drags the wall out of line; one that slides keeps it square while it travels.
Most racks are opaque plastic in a colour a factory chose. Clear acrylic disappears against wood, linen or stone, which matters when the game happens in a dining room. It also photographs well, which is not nothing for a group that posts its tables.
In a standing group, the practical use of six finishes is that each player keeps a seat. The same rack every week means a hand left while somebody takes a call is identifiable, and nobody rebuilds at the wrong place after a break.
The two reasons to replace racks are worth naming. Either the pushers have separated and no longer hold, or the racks are too short for the tiles and hands sit proud of the lip where the table can read them. Both change the game rather than the look of it.
Acrylic wipes clean and does not hold the oil that comes off hands over an evening. It scratches more easily than melamine, so stack the racks rather than sliding them across each other into a bag.
