keyboard_arrow_downMost mahjong sets arrive in packaging designed to survive shipping and nothing more. Within a year the corners have split, the lid no longer sits flat, and the set moves into a plastic bag. From there it takes about two years for the first tiles to go missing.
An empty case fixes that, and it is a far smaller purchase than replacing the set.
Wood buffers humidity. A set stored through a damp winter in a cardboard box takes on moisture, and melamine tiles will tolerate that while a wooden or bamboo backed set will not. A wooden case moderates the swings.
It also survives being carried. Card handles being lifted a dozen times; after that the corners go.
This is the one thing to get right, and the listing does not publish internal dimensions. Mahjong sets vary enormously: 144 tiles at 20 mm occupy a fraction of the space taken by 166 tiles at 40 mm.
Measure your set, stacked as it will be stored, before ordering. A case that is slightly too large is workable; one that is too small is useless.
An empty case does not come with trays or dividers, so tiles sit loose unless you keep them in their original sleeves. For a set that travels, that means some rattle. Adding a folded cloth inside solves it and costs nothing.
It is also worth deciding what else lives in the box. Dice, a wind indicator and a scoring pad all disappear otherwise, and a case with room for them keeps a set genuinely complete.
Dry cloth. Keep it out of damp, and never leave a wet glass on the lid. A wooden box that has been soaked will not close square again.
