What a first set needs is the correct count, standard faces, and a price that makes the decision easy. Everything else can wait until the game has taken.
Almost every book, video and app teaches from a traditional set. Learning from a source that shows different tiles from the ones in your hand adds an unnecessary layer of translation at exactly the moment when a beginner is most likely to give up.
Standard white tiles with the usual characters remove that entirely.
A beginner's set gets handled clumsily and often. Printed markings on a small tile fade fastest exactly where they are touched most, so a printed starter set often looks worn before its owner has finished learning.
If the game takes, this set becomes the travel set and something full sized arrives for the table. That is the normal path, and it is why a first set should be inexpensive rather than definitive.
Two things are worth adding on the first order rather than the third. A cloth, because tiles slide and clatter on a bare table and a folded cloth fixes both. And racks, because a table where every hand lies flat is a table where the game has lost its point.
Neither is expensive, and both change the first evening considerably more than a better set of tiles would.
