keyboard_arrow_downMahjong groups rarely meet in the same place twice. The set goes in a car, up a flight of stairs, onto somebody's dining table and back again. That journey is what wears equipment out, and it is the reason weight matters more than most listings admit.
At two and a half kilos this is a set one person carries in one hand while holding a door. It does that without dropping to travel sized tiles, which is the usual compromise and the one people regret.
The phrase appears on a lot of listings and usually means nothing. Here it means the tile is 31.5 mm tall and 16 mm deep: a hand sized object with enough mass to be placed deliberately, not a miniature that slides when the table is knocked.
It also means the set is cut to the American count, with the joker complement the National Mah Jongg League card is written around. Sets sold as family games often quietly ship the Chinese count and no jokers.
Strong colour is a practical choice on a busy table. Four players, four racks, a wall in the middle and a discard pile: the faster the eye separates one from another, the fewer disputes about what was discarded and when. Ivory blurs. Magenta does not.
A travelling set takes knocks. Acrylic coloured through its thickness hides them, because the material under a chipped edge is the same colour as the surface. Surface printed tiles show every mark.
Damp cloth. Keep the tiles contained rather than loose in a bag, because loose tiles grinding against each other in a car is what scratches an acrylic set. Out of direct sun.
