Two things protect a set through that. The material, because acrylic takes a knock without marking the way a printed tile does. And the spares, because the tile lost in a hire car is not coming back.
Six blanks look like padding on a spec sheet. On a travelling set they are the difference between a game and an ornament. A set missing one tile cannot be played properly, and replacing a single tile from a Chinese factory is not a thing anyone manages.
Count the tiles back into the box at the end of every session. It takes a minute and it is the only habit that reliably keeps a set alive.
108 suit tiles, one through nine in bams, cracks and dots, four of each. Sixteen winds, twelve dragons, eight flowers. Ten jokers, which is what the National Mah Jongg League card is written around. Six blanks.
