Hardwood does the opposite: handling deepens the colour, oils from hands work into the grain, and a set that has been played weekly for fifteen years is visibly better than the day it arrived.
That is the whole argument for a wooden set, and it is why they are handed down rather than replaced.
Red sandalwood is dense, dark and slow growing, which is why it is expensive and why the tiles carry real weight. The other options in the range sit at different densities and tones, from paler golden woods to near black.
Denser wood makes a heavier tile with a lower sound. Lighter wood makes a set that is easier to carry and slightly brighter on the table. Neither is better; they are different objects.
This is the part nobody mentions when selling wooden sets. Wood moves. A set stored next to a radiator through a winter, or in a basement through a humid summer, will not stay flat, and a warped tile does not sit in a wall.
Keep it somewhere a book would be comfortable. Never leave a wet glass on the box, and dry any spill immediately rather than letting it stand.
A wooden box does more here than presentation. It buffers humidity changes, keeps the tiles from knocking against each other, and holds the set together, which is how wooden sets survive their first decade.

That divides into two camps. One likes colour, and pale tinted acrylic wins there. The other likes material, and hardwood is hard to beat: red sandalwood is dense and dark, the grain reads differently on every tile, and hand rubbed faces deepen with handling rather than fading. A set played weekly for years looks better than it did new, which is a kind of prettiness that has to be earned rather than bought.
The red dragon, zhong, is the one most often given that role. It carries the character for centre, it scores in most rule sets, and it turns up widely in decoration outside the game. Flowers and seasons are also read as fortunate, since drawing one gives a bonus and a replacement draw. None of this changes how a hand is played, but it explains why the red dragon is the tile people photograph.
Ownership is generally not the issue; selling and moving them is. International trade in elephant ivory is restricted under CITES, the United States has a near total federal ban on commercial ivory sales with narrow antique exemptions, and several states go further. Many old sets described as ivory are in fact bone, which is unrestricted. Anything made today, these included, uses other materials entirely.
Value sits with complete antique sets rather than with single tiles. Pre war bone and bamboo sets in their original cases command the most, followed by early carved hardwood sets, and provenance counts as much as condition. One loose tile has almost no market, since a set missing a tile cannot be played and cannot be matched. Modern sets, wooden ones included, are bought to be used rather than to appreciate.
