keyboard_arrow_downThe American game is built on 166 tiles. Beyond the three suits and the honours, it needs jokers, and the National Mah Jongg League writes its annual card assuming they are there. A set sold as American with no jokers is a Chinese set with American packaging, and it will not play the card.
This set carries the full count.
Each suit tile shows its number in arabic numerals alongside the Chinese character. Experienced players stop seeing them within a fortnight. Anyone new does not: they read the corner, place the tile and stay in the flow of the hand rather than asking what they are holding.
If you host people who are learning, this single feature does more for an evening than anything else on the spec sheet.
The tile is built up in layers rather than moulded in one piece, which is what produces the depth you see when you turn it towards a light. It also means the colour is structural: a knocked edge shows purple, not a white core.
Acrylic does not absorb. A spilled glass wipes off, where a wood backed tile would swell and lift.
At four and a half kilos this is a substantial set. That is worth knowing before ordering if it is meant to travel to a different house every week: it is a set for a table more than for a tote bag.
Damp cloth only, no solvents. Store the tiles in a case rather than loose, since acrylic marks more easily than melamine. Out of direct sun, which dulls any coloured resin over years.
A group with mixed experience around the table. The corner numerals carry beginners, the joker count satisfies the regulars, and the colour means the set looks like a choice rather than a default.
