A melamine tile carries enough mass to be placed rather than dropped, and it makes the flat click on the table that anyone who has played for years will recognise. Acrylic is lighter and brighter and slightly quieter, which is a preference rather than a fault, but it is a different object in the hand.
Melamine also takes a deep carve. The characters are cut into the face and coloured in the cut, so they sit below the surface where thumbs cannot wear them.
Coloured mahjong sets usually colour the face, which looks striking in a photograph and asks slightly more of the eye at the table. This set does the opposite: ivory faces, pink backs. The wall shows colour while it is built, the faces stay conventional when they turn.
For a group where someone is still learning the tile faces, that is the arrangement that helps. The reading stays exactly as it is in every book and every app.
American sets come at 152, 160 and 166. The suits and honours are fixed; the variable is how many jokers and blanks arrive with them. At 160 there are enough jokers for the National Mah Jongg League card and a few blanks held back as spares.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Melamine yellows in sustained heat, so keep the set out of a car through a summer and away from a radiator. It does not mind being handled, which is the whole point of it.
