    Traditional Mahjong

Outdoor Mahjong Set, 20 mm Tiles, Four Colours

A small set built for playing outside, tiles at 20 mm in four colours, light enough to bring without deciding whether it is worth it.

    • Light enough that bringing it is never a decision, which is the only test an outdoor set has to pass.
    • Small tiles hold their place on a blanket or a picnic table better than large ones, which roll.
    • Four colours, so a set is recognisable when several groups meet in the same park.
    • CE certified, which is worth having on a product handled by a mixed group.

What outdoors does to a mahjong set

Playing outside changes three things about the equipment, and none of them are obvious until the first attempt.

Surfaces are uneven. A picnic table has gaps, a blanket has folds, and a full sized tile standing 40 mm tall topples on both. Small tiles have a lower centre of gravity and stay upright where large ones do not.

Light is bright. Outdoors, in daylight, small markings are easier to read than they are indoors under a lamp, which is why a mini set that struggles in an evening room works perfectly well in a garden.

And things get lost. Grass swallows tiles. This is the setting where counting the set back in matters most.

    Weight as the real test

An outdoor set has to be light enough that nobody weighs up whether to bring it. Under a kilo passes that test; two kilos does not, and the two kilo set stays home while the picnic happens without it.

    Four colours

Practical rather than decorative. Where several people in a group own sets, a stray tile in the wrong bag is only recoverable if the sets look different.

    Which colour to take

The four options are brown, blue, black and yellow. Outdoors the practical consideration is contrast against what the set will sit on: a picnic blanket, a wooden table, grass. Black and brown disappear against dark wood; blue and yellow hold their edge on almost anything.

If the set will mostly live in a bag and come out on holidays, colour is the only reliable way to identify it when a group brings several.

    Care

Dry the tiles before putting them away if they have been on damp grass. A barely damp cloth otherwise. Count them back in, every single time.

    How to play Mahjong ?

     Image

Step 1 — Build the Wall

At the beginning of the game, all Mahjong tiles are shuffled face down on the table. Each player then stacks their tiles into a wall. Once the walls are connected together, every player draws their starting hand of tiles.

    Step 2 — Draw & Discard

Players take turns drawing one tile and discarding another. The goal is to slowly build the perfect combination of sequences, pairs, and matching sets while paying attention to the tiles discarded by opponents.

Step 3 — Complete Your Winning Hand

Win the game by completing a full Mahjong hand before the other players. Strategy, observation, and timing are key — every decision can change the outcome of the game and make each round exciting and unique.

    A Set Worth Collecting

More than just a board game, each Mahjong set is a true collector’s piece. From elegant tiles to unique designs and premium finishes, every detail is made to stand out.

Build your own collection, showcase your favorite sets at home, and enjoy products that combine entertainment with beautiful décor.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Hobby Lobby have mah jongg sets?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Stock varies from one retailer to the next, so the more useful question is what to check before buying rather than where. Confirm the tile count, the tile size and whether the set is the Chinese game or the American one, since the two do not share equipment. This one is built around 20 x 14 x 10 mm tiles and weighs 0.9 kg in total, a specification aimed at picnic tables and blankets rather than a dining room.

Is the Costco mahjong set good?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Judge any set on its specification rather than on where it came from. The three numbers that decide how it plays are tile size, total weight and whether the count is the 144 tile Chinese set or the 166 tile American one with jokers. This outdoor set is deliberately small at 20 mm and light at 0.9 kg, which makes it steady on a blanket and easy to carry, and less comfortable to read than a 40 mm household tile.

    Why do Jews love mahjong?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Mahjong reached the United States in the 1920s and took hold in Jewish American communities, where it became a regular social evening passed between generations. The National Mah Jongg League, founded in 1937, standardised the American rules and still issues an annual hand card. That version uses 166 tiles including jokers, so it needs its own equipment rather than a 144 tile Chinese set like this one.

Why is a mahjong set so expensive?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Cost follows material and finish more than anything else. A full set is 144 individually moulded and engraved tiles, and the price climbs with density, engraving depth, hand polishing and the case they arrive in. Sets that stay affordable do so by using lighter plastic, smaller tiles and no box. This outdoor set sits at that end on purpose: 20 mm tiles, 0.9 kg total, nothing added that would make it heavier to carry.
