keyboard_arrow_downThe phrase appears on a great many Chinese tile listings and is rarely explained. It describes the final finishing stage: the tile face is polished by hand rather than left as it comes out of the mould.
The result is a surface with a very slight softness under the thumb. Experienced players use it. Sorting a hand without looking, feeling for a discard, reading the edge of a tile that is face down , all of that runs on touch, and a hard machine finish gives the fingers nothing to work with.
It is the single most requested feature on tiles sold into Chinese households, and it almost never appears on sets built for export.
39 mm and 41 mm. Both are full size by Chinese standards, where 40 mm is the norm. The choice is usually decided by what else is in the house: existing racks, an automatic table, or the size everyone in the group is used to.
If nothing constrains it, the larger tile is easier to read and heavier in the hand. The smaller is marginally easier for smaller hands to hold thirteen of.
The traditional count: three suits at 108, winds and dragons, flowers and seasons. No jokers, because the Chinese game does not use them. If you play from an American league card, this is not the set you need.
Jelly pink jade is a translucent tone rather than a flat colour, so the tile reads differently depending on the light behind it. On a dark table it warms; on a pale cloth it holds a clear edge.
A barely damp cloth and nothing else. Hand rubbed surfaces are the part of the tile that solvents damage first, and the finish cannot be restored at home.
