keyboard_arrow_downTiles sold for export run 30 to 40 mm because they have to fit standard racks and travel cases. Tiles sold into Chinese households run larger, because they are played on dedicated tables, often automatic ones, and nobody is carrying them anywhere.
At 42 mm this is a household tile. It is bigger than most Western players have handled, it reads from any seat, and it has a mass that changes how the game feels: tiles are placed rather than dropped, and a built wall does not drift when someone leans on the table.
The final polish is done by hand rather than left as moulded. What that produces is a face with a very slight softness, and players use it constantly without thinking about it: feeling for a tile in a hand of thirteen, checking an edge without turning it over, sorting by touch while watching the discard.
Machine finished tiles are harder and give the fingers nothing. It is the difference most often cited by players who have moved from an export set to a household one.
Check what these have to fit. A 42 mm tile will not sit in a rack cut for 30 mm American tiles, and it will jam an automatic table built for a smaller size. If you are replacing tiles in an existing setup, measure first.
A barely damp cloth and nothing stronger. Solvents attack the hand polished surface before anything else, and the finish is not recoverable at home.

It depends less on the shop than on knowing what you are asking for before you order. Decide which game you play, since the traditional and American sets do not share equipment, then settle on tile size, because a rack or an automatic table cut for a smaller tile will not take these. At 42 mm these are Chinese household size, larger than most of what is sold for export, so measure your existing setup first.
Table etiquette generally asks the opposite. Tiles are drawn one at a time with the hand open and visible, so nobody has to wonder whether two came away together, and a drawn tile is turned to face you rather than palmed. Clubs differ on how strictly this is enforced. Size helps here: at 42 mm and 5 kg across the set, a tile is lifted cleanly instead of being scraped off the table.
It became a community fixture rather than a passing craze. After the game reached the United States in the 1920s, Jewish American women built standing weekly games around it, and those games were inherited daughter to daughter across the twentieth century. The National Mah Jongg League has organised that version since 1937. It is played with its own set and its own annual card, separate from the traditional Chinese game.
It is done, and it is slow. The traditional method laminates bone to bamboo, cuts the blank to size, then carves and inks each face by hand, which is why antique sets show small variations between tiles. Modern hobby versions are usually cut from acrylic or hardwood and engraved. Even a manufactured tile can keep one hand step: the final polish here is rubbed by hand, which is what gives the faces a surface the fingers can read.
