It produces a face with a slight softness that players use constantly without thinking about it: feeling for a tile among thirteen, checking an edge without turning it, sorting by touch while watching the discard.
It is common on tiles made for Chinese households and rare on export sets, and it is rarer still at 24 mm, where most production is aimed squarely at price.
Green, blue and pink rather than ivory. The practical benefit is contrast: a coloured tile separates from a pale cloth and from a wooden table, which is where traditional ivory struggles most under evening light.
The secondary benefit is identification, which matters in any group where more than one person owns a set.
Compact without being fiddly. The faces remain readable across a small table, and the set carries easily. It suits a household that plays regularly but does not have a dedicated table.
Tiles made for Chinese households assume a dedicated table and sometimes an automatic one. Before ordering, check what these need to fit: racks cut for American tiles will not take a household tile of a different height, and an automatic table will only accept the size it was built for.
On an ordinary dining table with no racks, none of that applies and the set simply works.

The green tile usually means Fa, the green dragon, one of three dragons alongside the red and the white. A set carries 12 dragon tiles, four of each, and they count as honours rather than as part of a numbered suit. That is separate from the colour of the tile body: these hand rubbed tiles are produced in green, blue, pink and white, and the body colour has no bearing on play or scoring.
Contrast is what to solve for. Green tiles at 24 mm read clearly against a dark mat in navy, charcoal or black, and lose their edge on a green cloth of a similar tone. A mid grey or a deep neutral keeps the faces legible under evening light without competing with the colour. Beyond looks, a mat earns its place mechanically: it stops small tiles sliding on a bare table and quiets the shuffle.
On the faces, colour is part of the marking rather than a rule of its own. The dragons are red, green and white, the characters suit is printed in red and blue, and the flowers and seasons carry mixed colour. None of it changes what a tile does. The body colour is a separate matter and purely a question of finish, which is why this set is offered in green, blue, pink and white.
Suits, honours and bonus tiles. The suits are dots, bamboo and characters, numbered one to nine with four copies of each, 108 tiles in all. The honours are the four winds and the three dragons, 16 and 12 tiles. The bonus tiles are the eight flowers and seasons. That is the 144 of a Chinese set, and there are no jokers in it, which is the line between this game and the American one.
