Engraving on a 20 mm tile

Miniature sets are where printing normally wins, because engraving a character into a face the size of a thumbnail is slow and the tooling is expensive. The result is that most mini sets fade: within a year of regular play the markings are noticeably lighter, and within three they are guesswork.

This set is engraved. The character is cut into the tile and coloured in the cut, so the wearing surface is the tile around the marking rather than the marking itself. On a set this small, that is the difference between a travel set that lasts and one that gets replaced.

The dimensions, both of them

The tile is 20 x 14 x 10 mm. The box is 155 x 95 x 50 mm, which is roughly a paperback.

Published box dimensions are rare on mahjong listings and they are the number that actually decides the purchase for a travel set. Whether 144 tiles fit in your bag is a question about the box, not the tiles.

What 20 mm costs you

Legibility, and it is worth being direct about it. At 20 mm the characters are small, and a table of four will lean in more than they would with a full sized set. In exchange you get a game that fits in a coat pocket.

For a suitcase, a boat, a hospital visit or a small flat, it is the right trade. For a weekly table at home, it is not.

Barely damp cloth. Count the tiles back into the box every time, because a 20 mm tile that reaches a car seat is gone for good.
