That means the decision is purely about the room and the eye, with no risk of accidentally buying a set that plays differently from the one in the photographs. It is not always true of coloured ranges, where a cheaper finish sometimes arrives on a thinner tile.

A set advertised at 160 without jokers is not the American game. The composition is worth reading rather than the headline.
Bonded sheets rather than a single moulding. The colour sits in the body of the tile, so an edge that chips shows the same colour as the face, and the finish does not wear thin at the corners where hands rest.
Two practical points. Darker finishes read better on pale cloth and under warm light, which is the condition most evening games are played in. And in a group where several people own sets, an unusual finish is how a stray tile finds its way home.
Barely damp cloth, no solvents, stored contained and away from direct sun. Nothing about the finish changes that.
