Blue grey is the compromise that actually works in a room. It is dark enough to separate cleanly from a pale cloth and from ivory racks, and quiet enough that the set can stay out between sessions without arguing with the furniture.
Tinted clear acrylic carries light through the body of the tile rather than reflecting it off the top. Built into a wall under a lamp, the edges pick up and the wall reads as a made object. Opaque tiles give a flat block of colour instead.
It is a small difference on a photograph and an obvious one on a table at nine in the evening.
The tint runs through the acrylic. That is the reason a set like this looks the same after five years as it did in its first month: the places that wear fastest, the corners and the long edges, are the same material as the face. Surface printed tiles fade exactly where thumbs rest.
A barely damp cloth is all it needs. Keep solvents away entirely, since they fog acrylic permanently and there is no home remedy. Store the tiles contained rather than loose so nothing hard travels with them, and keep the set out of sustained direct sun.
This is a tile set. If it is a first purchase, you will also want racks: four players without racks is four players who can read each other's hands.
