At 20 mm, a set is genuinely pocketable and genuinely hard to read across a table. At 26 it is comfortable and no longer fits a small bag. Twenty two keeps most of the portability and gives back a noticeable amount of face, which is where the character has to fit.
Small tiles are usually printed, because engraving a face this size is slow work. The consequence shows up in year two: printed markings thin where thumbs rest, and they thin unevenly, so the tiles handled most become the hardest to read.
Engraving cuts the character into the tile and lays colour into the cut. The wearing surface is the melamine around the marking. A set made this way is as legible in a decade as it is now.
Mini sets often drop to a lighter plastic to save weight, and the tiles end up feeling like counters. Melamine holds its density, so even at 22 mm the tile has a small weight in the hand and a proper click on the table.
