    This is not mahjong

Worth saying first, because the category is confusing and the confusion causes returns.

Seaside Escape is a matching puzzle that borrows mahjong's tile format. Players clear tiles by matching pairs of identical patterns. There is no wall, no hand of thirteen, no suits, no honours and no scoring in the mahjong sense.

Anyone looking for mahjong needs a 144 tile Chinese set or a 166 tile American one. This is a different game that happens to use tiles.

    What it is good at

Two things mahjong is not. It can be played alone, which makes it a genuinely different proposition for an evening with nobody around. And it needs no explanation: the rule is match the pairs, and a new player is playing in under a minute.

That makes it the tile game that comes out with children and with guests who would find mahjong daunting.

    Thirty millimetre blocks

Large enough to handle easily and to read at a glance. On a matching game that matters more than on mahjong, because the whole activity is visual scanning rather than reasoning about a hand.

    Care

Wipe clean. Count the pieces back in, since a matching game missing one tile has an unmatchable pair and becomes unfinishable.

    How to play Mahjong ?

     Image

Step 1 — Build the Wall

At the beginning of the game, all Mahjong tiles are shuffled face down on the table. Each player then stacks their tiles into a wall. Once the walls are connected together, every player draws their starting hand of tiles.

    Step 2 — Draw & Discard

Players take turns drawing one tile and discarding another. The goal is to slowly build the perfect combination of sequences, pairs, and matching sets while paying attention to the tiles discarded by opponents.

Step 3 — Complete Your Winning Hand

Win the game by completing a full Mahjong hand before the other players. Strategy, observation, and timing are key — every decision can change the outcome of the game and make each round exciting and unique.

    A Set Worth Collecting

More than just a board game, each Mahjong set is a true collector’s piece. From elegant tiles to unique designs and premium finishes, every detail is made to stand out.

Build your own collection, showcase your favorite sets at home, and enjoy products that combine entertainment with beautiful décor.

    Frequently asked questions

How to set up seaside escape mahjong?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Worth being clear first: this is a matching puzzle in the Seaside Escape style, not mahjong. There is no wall to build, no hand of thirteen and no dealer. The tiles are laid out in the printed arrangement, face up, and play is simply clearing pairs of identical patterns until the layout is gone. The 30 mm blocks are large enough to scan quickly, and one person can play it alone.

    Why did China ban mahjong?

    keyboard_arrow_down

The game was restricted for much of the middle of the twentieth century, treated as gambling rather than as a pastime, and it returned to open play from the 1980s onward. It is widely played across China today, though local authorities have at times moved against mahjong parlours where money is involved. The set here is a pattern matching tile puzzle rather than the game itself, so none of that history attaches to it.

What is the best mahjong game to buy?

    keyboard_arrow_down

That depends on which game the table intends to play. A Chinese set means 144 tiles, and the American game needs 166 with jokers and a current card of legal hands. Neither describes this product, which is a matching tile puzzle that borrows the mahjong tile format and has none of its rules. It suits a solo evening or a table with children, and anyone after real mahjong should buy a proper set instead.

What is the tile game called in Seaside Escape?

    keyboard_arrow_down

Seaside Escape is the name of the pattern matching tile game itself, and this is a set in that style. Players clear the layout by pairing identical patterns, which is the whole rule. Blocks measure 30 mm, the set weighs 1 kg and it is marked for ages 14 and over. Several patterns are available. It is worth counting the pieces back in, since one missing tile leaves an unmatchable pair.
