keyboard_arrow_downAlmost every mahjong set sold today is melamine or acrylic, and there are good reasons for that: they are consistent, cheap and unaffected by humidity. Wood is none of those things, and people still choose it, for three reasons that only show up in play.
It warms. A resin tile stays at room temperature and starts to feel slightly tacky after two hours of handling. Wood takes hand heat and holds it.
It sounds different. The click of a wooden tile is lower and shorter than plastic. Players who have grown up with wood find resin sets sharp and loud, and it is the first thing they mention.
And it ages rather than wears. A resin set eventually looks tired. A wooden one darkens.
Nanmu is a Chinese hardwood used for furniture and, historically, for imperial construction. The golden silk variety carries a shimmer in the grain that shifts with the angle of light, which is where the water wave description comes from.
Because it is a natural material, no two tiles carry the same figure. Variation between tiles is the wood behaving normally, not a fault.
Wood moves with humidity. A set that spends a winter next to a radiator and a summer in a damp basement will not stay flat. Keep it somewhere stable, which in practice means anywhere a book would be comfortable.
Never let it sit in water and never wipe it with anything more than a barely damp cloth. Spilled drinks should be dried immediately rather than left.

Look for weight in the individual tile, an engraved rather than printed face, and a material that ages in a way you like. Solid wood is the clearest case of that last point: golden silk nanmu darkens and gains depth with handling where resin only wears. At 7 kg this is a table set rather than a travelling one, and the water wave grain runs differently through every tile because the material is natural rather than moulded.
Wood is the expensive route. Nanmu is slow growing, the stock has to be cut and matched so a set reads as one object, and a good proportion of the timber is lost as waste along the way. Every tile is then engraved and finished individually. Resin sets are inexpensive because a mould does all of that at once. A 7 kg wooden set is priced against material and labour rather than tooling, which is most of the difference.
It depends almost entirely on material and completeness. Bone and bamboo sets from the 1920s and hardwood sets still in their original boxes attract collectors; celluloid and early plastic sets rarely do. A missing tile takes most of the value with it, since single tiles cannot be matched. Old wooden sets in particular tend to be worth keeping and playing, because hardwood that has been handled for decades looks better than it did new.
The short version is that a game arrived at the right moment and stayed. Mahjong reached America in the 1920s, and in Jewish American households it settled into a weekly game among women that has now run through four generations. The National Mah Jongg League has published the card for that version since 1937. It is worth knowing that it is a distinct game with its own tile set, so a traditional Chinese set is not the equipment for it.
