keyboard_arrow_downPeople give up on mahjong for two reasons that have nothing to do with the game. The first is that they cannot read the tiles, so the first evening is two hours of confusion. The second is that traditional sets look serious, and a beginner assumes the table will be too.
A numbered, illustrated set removes both. The numerals mean a hand is readable immediately; the illustration signals that nobody is going to be annoyed at a slow player.
The three suits run one to nine, and on a traditional set only the Chinese character shows. Printing the numeral alongside means a new player identifies a tile instantly and absorbs the character over the following weeks by association.
Regular players stop seeing the numerals within a fortnight, so there is no cost to having them.
The reason to buy a numbered set rather than a children's game is that it stays useful. The count is full, the faces are standard, and the set can go on being played for years after nobody needs the numbers.
Numbered sets are sometimes built as introductory products with reduced counts, which makes them useless once the beginner improves. A full set does not have that problem: the numerals stop being noticed, and the set carries on.
Check the count on any numbered set before buying, because it is the specification most often quietly reduced.
