Under a kilo is portable in the sense that it goes in a bag already containing everything else, and that is the threshold at which a travel set stops being aspirational.
It is the reason these sets end up on boats, in holiday flats, in hospital bags and on long train journeys, while heavier sets stay home.
The tiles are engraved rather than printed, which is worth pausing on because it is unusual in this bracket. Printed miniature tiles fade within a year of regular play, and the fading is uneven: the tiles handled most go first, so the set becomes inconsistent before it becomes unusable.
Cut markings do not do that. The colour sits below the wearing surface.
Sets are lost by dispersal. Tiles end up in three places, the set is never quite complete, and eventually nobody suggests a game. A set that arrives with its own case stays together, and on a travel set that is worth more than any feature of the tiles themselves.
144 tiles: three suits, winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. No jokers, because the Chinese game does not use them. If the recipient plays from an American league card, this is the wrong set.
