Mahjong is a four player game and most sets are sold on that basis, which quietly limits when they come out. A two player variant means the set works on a weekday evening with one other person, rather than waiting for a group.

The two player game is shorter, the wall is smaller, and the scoring is simplified. It is not the full game, and it is what keeps a set in circulation between proper sessions.

Hand carved at mini size

Small tiles are usually printed because carving them is slow. Printed markings on a 20 mm face wear noticeably within a year of regular play, and unevenly, so the set becomes inconsistent before it becomes unusable. Carved markings sit below the wearing surface and do not do that.

What mini costs

Legibility. At this size four people will lean in more than they would at a full sized table, and someone learning the tile faces will find it harder. In exchange the whole game fits in a bag and lives on a shelf.

Care

Barely damp cloth. Count the tiles back in every session, because at this size a stray tile is a lost tile.
