Two things carry the price here: 144 individual tiles, each moulded and marked to match the others, and a box built to be looked at. The box is where much of the money goes and it earns it, since a set on a shelf gets played on a Tuesday and a set in a cupboard comes out twice a year. Mini tiles keep the whole thing to 1.2 kg, which is part of why it moves around the house at all.
Bakelite and catalin sets run roughly from the 1920s to the 1950s and are valued by collectors on colour, completeness and condition, with the stronger colours drawing more interest than plain ivory tones. Figures vary too much to quote, so an appraisal is the honest answer. Bakelite also yellows and can crack with age, which is why current sets are made in more stable plastics.
Look at the tile edge first. Bone laminated to bamboo with a visible join means pre-war, a single piece of dense plastic that has yellowed points to mid century, and modern tiles are uniform right through. Then the box, its hinges, and any maker's label inside the lid. The count helps too, since jokers and blanks indicate a later American set. A specialist settles it if the tiles look old.
