keyboard_arrow_downMahjong sets almost never break. They disperse. The tiles are in one drawer, the dice went into a board game box years ago, and eventually nobody suggests a game because assembling it takes ten minutes.
A sturdy box is the single thing that prevents that. It keeps 144 objects in one place, it survives being carried, and it is pleasant enough to leave out, which is what makes a set get used rather than stored.
The supplier describes these as large, and the practical point is about handling rather than reading. Thirteen tiles have to be held, sorted and rearranged repeatedly through a hand. Tiles that are too small have to be pinched; tiles at a proper size sit against each other and can be moved with a thumb.
It is the difference between a game that flows and one that fumbles, and it is felt most by anyone whose hands are not what they were.
144 tiles: 108 across the three suits, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers and seasons. No jokers, because the Chinese game does not use them. Someone playing from an American league card needs a 166 tile set instead.
Keep it dry. Leather in a damp cupboard grows mould on the inside where nobody looks, and a box that has been soaked will not close square again. A dry cloth is all the cleaning it needs.

And the case should survive weekly carrying, which a leather box does and a card sleeve does not.
Keep every piece in one container, because sets rarely break, they disperse into three drawers. Dry is the other rule: leather grows mould on the inside where nobody looks, and a box that has been soaked will not close square again. Wipe the tiles with a barely damp cloth, use a dry one on the box, and count all 144 back in at the end of a session so a missing tile is found the same evening.
An older set is priced on three things at once: what the tiles are made of, whether all 144 are present, and whether the original case survived. The case counts for more than people expect, because it is the part that usually failed first. A current set carries no collector value. This one is priced as equipment, a full traditional count in a leather box meant to be carried to a table weekly.
Warehouse sets tend to be complete and inexpensive, with small printed tiles and a soft case, and the container is the part that gives out first. That is where the gap between a card sleeve and a proper box is worth understanding before choosing. Check the count as well: 144 for the traditional Chinese game, 166 for the American one with jokers. The two do not share equipment.
